“I was diagnosed with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder,” she said softly. “It’s like a prison without the iron bars.”

After enduring a violent sexual assault by an unknown attacker, Bette found herself alone, shattered, and vulnerable. Then, before she could even begin to process her trauma, she received the unsettling news that her attacker had violated his probation. To ensure her safety, authorities placed her in a local women’s shelter.

As her stay in the shelter came to an end, Bette agonized over the daunting challenge of returning to independent living. For her, every shadow and sound felt like a threat, intensifying her PTSD.

Once safely housed, Bette found renewed hope through Catholic Social Services’ outreach team.
They helped her rebuild her confidence and sense of safety – all at her own pace – so she could begin to trust again.

With the empathy, patience, and caring support provided by CSS, Bette began to reclaim her days, taking walks, attending events, and participating in local activities.

“The CSS team played a vital role in my healing,” Bette reflected. “For the first time since the attack, I’m not afraid to live my life, and I am truly grateful for that.”
