June 9, 2026 - CTV & CBC Edmonton Media Coverage of "Landlords & Newcomers" event hosted by ISS

Our Immigration & Settlement Service hosted its annual Housing Event, bringing together landlords, newcomers, and community partners to discuss safe and successful renting.

This year’s event focused on housing and fire safety, helping newcomers better understand rental responsibilities and safe living practices in Canada. We were also grateful to have Edmonton Fire Rescue Services on site, engaging families and children with their fire truck and sharing fire safety information with attendees.

Participants also heard from Naveed Hakimi, who shared his experience of surviving an apartment fire after rebuilding his life in Canada as a refugee from Afghanistan.

No Longer Just Surviving, But Thriving

When Pierrette and her children arrived at Catholic Social Services’ Lurana emergency shelter, she didn’t know if she was running toward something or away from everything. She only knew they deserved more than a life of fear.
