When Naveed Hakimi and his family arrived in Canada in 2022 after fleeing conflict in Afghanistan, they began building a new life. Two years later, a devastating apartment fire destroyed their home, important documents and personal belongings, forcing the family to start over once again.

Eoin Murray, the vice-president of immigration and settlement services at Edmonton's CSS, presented his thoughts about AI adoption in supporting new arrivals in Canada at the Alberta Bishops Mission Collaboration Initiative (MCI) Summit in late May. He articulated how the technology can be used to bolster communication with new Canadians.

The Spring Art Walk was a vibrant celebration of youth creativity, featuring inspiring artwork from CSS youth, students, staff, and Community Creativity Workshop participants. With strong community turnout and enthusiastic support, the event showcased the incredible talent, dedication, and diverse perspectives within our community.​

Our Immigration & Settlement Service hosted its annual Housing Event, bringing together landlords, newcomers, and community partners to discuss safe and successful renting.​

This year’s event focused on housing and fire safety, helping newcomers better understand rental responsibilities and safe living practices in Canada. We were also grateful to have Edmonton Fire Rescue Services on site, engaging families and children with their fire truck and sharing fire safety information with attendees.​

Participants also heard from Naveed Hakimi, who shared his experience of surviving an apartment fire after rebuilding his life in Canada as a refugee from Afghanistan.​
