Community Rallies Behind Youth Artists at the annual Spring Art Walk

Community Rallies Behind Youth Artists at the annual Spring Art Walk

By Matthew Bretania - 2 min read.

At the end of this year’s CSS Spring Art Walk, every piece of artwork found a new home—not a single one was left behind.

Held on June 2, 2026, at ArtsHub Ortona, the 13th annual event brought together youth artists, staff, families, community partners, and supporters for an evening that highlighted creativity, self-expression, and community connection. Artwork created by CSS youth, alongside participants from the Community Creativity Workshops, were featured throughout the exhibition. The event also put a focus on the ongoing partnership with Kickstand Edmonton, whose youth contributed artwork and participated in the showcase.

The event was made possible through the sponsorship of the City of Edmonton’s Community Safety and Well-being Grant, which continues to invest in initiatives that strengthen community connection and youth well-being. In addition, Kickstand provided access to its dedicated creative space at West Edmonton Mall, where participants were able to create, collaborate, and develop their artistic skills throughout the year.

While the artwork was the focal point of the evening, organisers say the impact of the Art Walk extends far beyond the exhibition itself. For Mahad Omar, Youth Outreach Program Coordinator with CSS' Immigration and Settlement Services, the event represents an opportunity for young people to build meaningful relationships and find a sense of belonging through creativity.

"It goes back to that sense of belonging; a space where these youth can come in, be themselves, meet each other, and make these kinds of forever lasting bonds," said Omar. "The art is kind of like a medium for those community connections."

Many of the works featured during the event reflected the personal experiences and creative journeys of the youth artists. Through poetry, painting, photography, and other mediums, participants were able to share their stories with the broader community.

Renee Sullivan, Team Leader with CSS' Safe House program, says opportunities like the Art Walk allow young people to express themselves while developing confidence through creative expression. "The Art Walk gave the youth a platform to share their voice, their vulnerabilities, and strengths in a creative way; a way that fosters mastery," Sullivan said.
